Pamela Rosenkranz
'Immersive installation that activates ‘the knowledge mobilised in the technological, scientific and conceptual development of products, subverting the culturally consolidated meanings of art.'
These spacial series of work inspired me to work with different surfaces such as light and water. According to the design boom website, it is supposed to awaken different moods and feelings in an individual. The pink room below lets the daylight come in and create this soft ambiance cover the room with the help of the rose gold liquid substance. On the other hand, the green room which is further below barely lets the day light in therefore giving its place to an artificial green light. Overall it gives a much more intense setting where the visitors would have a different reaction. Since I want to represent different obsessions and habits with colours, this was a really useful reference and inspiration for a set design for the future stages of the project.
Gregory Crewdson
Crewdson is well known for his narrative pieces of photography where he tells an oblique story each with still life settings and characters to go with it. This artist is the closest to what I want to progress with in the next stages of this project. I want to create different characters for each habits and obsessions I have/had and have them interact in a subtle way. I think it's a good way to grab the viewers attention and make a more engaging project overall. I want to place certain hints on each photoshoot that supports the habit and how they evolve. I want my final outcome to be a narrative series of photography like this, or short motion clips edited together. So far, I think I would enjoy and be more productive in this direction where I will continue with photography.
The Welcome Collection- Medicine Man
I want to base my initial primary research on this permanent exhibition in the Welcome Collection. Even though it does not include much visual inspiration for me necessarily, I want to include different facts about medical sides of having obsessive behaviour and habits. This research I'm planning to do this week will be quite useful as a theoretical reference. Yes, my project will mostly be based on personal experiences (either first or second hand), however I could combine these observations with known facts to support my message.
James Turell
Turell had a very similar impact on me as Rosenkranz where I was inspired about the light and set design. In my first experimentation, I want to associate feelings with colours and give different habits and obsessions unique tones. I'm planning to do the first obsession on cleaning and organising therefore I wanted to use either white or yellow as a light to convey the feeling and habit. The white could potentially symbolise the cleanliness and perfection whereas yellow was a brief similarity to the cleaning products. As for the different forms, I could use a surface which will direct the light in different directions to give a more immersive effect.
Annabelle Craven-Jones
This artist was given to me in my weekly tutorial and it was very inspiring. It took the idea of how different tones and brightnesses of light can effect a persons state of mind such as the settings on an iPhone. Just like Rosenkranz, this research has given me ideas for experimentation. However this time, instead of set design, I was thinking of props and objects used. Obviously, this could be an iPhone, since I could portray peoples reaction on different lights being reflected on it. Moreover, phones are a perfect example of a modern obsession that people might have.
Requiem for a Dream- Darren Afronofsky
Although this film is primarily about drug addiction, I really liked the filmography where each character starts of drugs mildly in a positive state of mind where they get too obsessed with it and practically ruin their lives. I want to present the same ideology of how an obsession or an overwhelming habit can destroy a person if it gets out of hand. As I mentioned before, I have a high chance of developing my visuals with short clips of movements which get faster and faster where the character gets in a worse condition each time. I want to add sound effects as well that shows the feeling. Either way, even if I don't end up using videos as an outcome, this will be an effective step for me.
Black Swan- Darren Aronofsky
Black Swan is a film that deeply affected me. It tells the story of a young adult ballerina who strives for the lead role of the production they're soon going to perform. One thing about her is that, she is obsessed with being perfection which even she admits in the dialogues. Seeing her destroy herself with this fake reality she had created really reminded me of my project and how each action we take can result in big things just like the butterfly effect. It can be a different aspect I can search throughout my project.
